Caldener mineral water is a brand of Hassia Group, from Calden which is a municipality in the northern Hessian district of Kassel. Johann Philipp Wilhelm Hinkel laid the foundation stone for the fountain company in 1864. In 1898, his son Fritz made the mineral water a brand and gave it the name hassia – the Latin word for Hesse. Wilhelm and Otto Hinkel drill a new well in 1936 and systematically expand the family business. In 1972, Günter Hinkel relocated to the outskirts of Bad Vilbel and built one of the most modern fountain operations in the Federal Republic of that time. In 1982 Hassia merged with the neighboring Luisen-Brunnen and founded Lichtenau mineral springs in Saxony in 1990. The development of the Hassia Group began with this first subsidiary.
